| 14, 7:30 pm - Tsubetsu (Chimikeppu Lake) Nighttime Birdwatching Event It was raining, but 14 people came, even one from Sapporo. We wondered whether we should cancel the event because of the rain, but it temporarily stopped around 7 p.m., our scheduled starting time. We moved around the lake by car and stopped at 1-km intervals to listen to birds. Near the hotel we heard the call of a Brown Hawk-Owl (Aoba-zuku). At the final spot in the direction of Rikubetsu, we heard not one but two species of owl, a rare occurrence. We continued for an hour and a half in the intermittent rain. After the event ended, some stayed overnight in their cars for the early-morning event the next day. [from report by Hanada-san] | ||||

| 15, 5:00 am - Tsubetsu (Chimikeppu Lake) Event Rain from morning. Eight people had come by the starting time of 5:00 a.m., but conditions were not good for a birdwatching event. It was a day off for everyone, and because the forecast said the rain would stop, we started at 6:00. Sure enough, the rain mostly stopped.  16, 8:00 am - Kitami (Tomisato Dam) Event The weather is wonderful, but the chirping of the spring cicadas (Terpnosia nigricosta) is too loud for us to hear the birds. The call of the Oriental Cuckoo (Tsutsudori) was the only one we could hear clearly. We had a long look at Grey Herons catching fish on the opposite bank of the reservoir.  23, 6:00 am - Koshimizu Wild Flower Park Event This location is an open coastal scrubland where small birds can be seen. We set an early time for this event, because early morning is the best time to hear the calls. First, on the Tofutsu Lake side, we saw the dynamic displays of Latham's Snipe, a Whooper Swan that did not go back north possibly because of an injury, and White-tailed Sea-Eagles flying overhead. After that we climbed up Tenrangaoka Hill and saw Siberian Rubythroat, Middendorff's Grasshopper Warbler, Chestnut-eared Bunting, and others. Two Cuckoos landed on a Japanese Rose (Hamanasu) bush, possibly looking for a chance to lay their eggs in the nest of a Stonechat. A male Stonechat fiercely stood them off. While the Stonechat chased them around, Stonechats in neighboring territories joined the chase and it became 3 stonechats against 2 cuckoos. The cuckoos eventually left and the stonechats' defense was successful. The event ended among the buds of many Siberian Lillies (Ezo-sukashi-yuri). [from report by Gerazou-san] |

 30, 8:00 am - Tsubetsu (Nonno Forest) Event Nonno Forest is located between Tsubetsu town and the Tsubetsu Pass. There is a hot spring hotel here called the Mori Tsubetsu Hotel, and the path through the woods along the stream filled with Japanese Primroses at the time is adjacent to the hotel. Just before entering the forest trail we saw two White-throated Needletails flying above us. They flew around for a long time, enabling us to have a good look at them against the clear blue sky. Inside the forest, the primroses were in bloom and we heard the beautiful call of a Eurasian Wren and eventually found it (photo at top right). It was there for quite a long time while we watched and listened. From there we walked up the hill to a lookout with views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below.
