 4, 9:00 am - Tofutsu Lake shorebirds event at Swan Park Under the beautiful blue Okhotsk sky, 38 of us, young and old, gathered at the Tofutsu Waterfowl & Wetland Center to enjoy looking at birds. In the tidal waters in front of us we could already see a variety of shorebirds such as Grey-tailed Tattlers, Rufous-necked Stints, Great Knots, and Greenshanks. As we were observing and learning about their particular features and habits, someone announced the arrival of a Common Kingfisher. We love to watch these kingfishers, and the kids among us were delighted as well. There were two primary school brothers who are regular birdwatchers, a junior high student, and two pre-schoolers. The Okhotsk region is just now entering the shorebird season [which continues through September]. Tofutsu Lake, Notoro Lake, and Komuke Lake are just a few of the excellent spots in the area to observe them. If you're not yet familiar with these birds, the Tofutsu Lake Center, equipped with scopes, binoculars and guidebooks, is a good place to start.  25, 9:00 am - Notoro Lake event at Ubaranai We arrived before 9:00 at the meeting place, but there was no sign of birds in the field of coral grass at the lake. Then suddenly we heard the calls of Red-crowned Cranes! Two were flying over the southern shore toward the west and we could see them land at a fishing port. So we all headed toward the fishing port, too. As we were walking along the shore and watching the cranes, someone spotted huge numbers of Rufous-necked Stints on an embankment. We were able to enjoy a close look at them from just a few meters away. There was a Far Eastern Curlew feeding in deeper waters, and a group of Common Greenshanks running after small fish in shallower waters. Then another pair of Red-crowned Cranes flew overhead, a total of four for the day. And higher up, a White-tailed Sea-Eagle... [from report] |
